Fuel Efficiency

The most fuel efficient car sold in the US in 2006 is the Honda Insight. The two-seat car has a 5-speed manual transmission, a 3 cylinder, 1 liter motor and gets 60 miles city, 66 miles on the highway.

The least fuel efficient car is also a two-seater. The Bugatti Veyron has an 16 cylinder, 8 liter motor with a 6-speed automatic transmission. You can expect to get 8 mpg in the city and 15 mpg on the highway. At stop speed, which is 253 miles per hour, the mileage drops to 2.1 mpg. At that rate of speed, the car will empty its 26 gallon (100 liter) fuel tank in just 12.5 minutes.

But if you have enough money to afford the 1.1 million dollar price tag, chances are you were not looking at fuel economy.

Bugatti is owned by Volkswagen. The 2006 Volkswagen Golf Diesel and the Volkswagen Beetle Diesel have the distinction of being the two most fuel efficient subcompact cars on the market. Therefore Volkswagen has the distinction of manufacturing both the best and worst fuel mileage cars in 2006.
