The smallest actual republic is the country of Nauru, an island located in the Asia-Pacific region of the Pacific Ocean. The total size of this country is 8 square miles (21 sq km) (5,112 acres) and has a population under 10,000 people. It is the only nation in the world without an official capital.
The world's largest country in comparison is Russia. Spanning across the Eurasian land mass, it covers 10 time zones and an area of 6.6 million square miles (17 million sq km) (4,223,993,478 acres) with a population of 141.5 million (UN, 2005)
If the size of Nauru was used as a block of measurement for land area, Russia would be roughly 809,524 Nauru's in size. The United States would be 466,667 Nauru's in size.
