Vinko Bogarti, a Sporting Legend
Vinko Bogarti is a true sporting legend. Millions have seen him perform for years yet nobody knows his name.
In 1968, Vinko made what could only be considered a disastrous run down the ski jump. He dusted himself off and made another run, this time he was successful.
What he didn't know is that a cameraman had recorded his bad jump. That film clip is remembered by a generation of viewers as "...the agony of defeat" shot for the opening sequence of "ABC Wide World of Sports."
During that 30 year span of time, Vinko had no idea that the fall was recorded or that he was being shown every week on American television until he was invited by ABC to a dinner celebrating the 30th anniversary of the show.
During that dinner, Vinko was introduced and received the second longest standing ovation of the night, second only to boxing legend Mohammed Ali. Pretty good for an otherwise unknown athlete.
