Most Passengers on an Airplane
On May 24, 1991, El Al Airlines flew a a specially chartered Boeing 747 from Addis Ababa to Israel. This was part of "Operation Solomon" -- a project to bring Ethiopian Jews to Israel.
The plane departed Ethiopia with 1,087 passengers. It landed with 1,088 passengers when a baby was born in flight. A typical 747-400 will hold between 416 and 568 passengers.
Even the new Airbus A380-800 will only carry between 555 passengers in a three-class configuration or up to 853 passengers total.
