Transcontinental Road Trip
The fewest states you would have to go through to go from the West Coast to the East Coast, without leaving the Country would be seven, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Missouri, Kentucky and finally Virginia.
Planning a Road Trip
If you are planning this as a road trip, you start in Santa Monica, California (Because we like the city) and head East on Interstate 10 to East SR-60 to North Interstate 605 to East Interstate 210 to North Interstate 15 to East Interstate 40 to North Interstate 17. This gets you to Flagstaff, Arizona.
From Flagstaff you head East on Interstate 40, then head North on Interstate 25 to exit 451. You then head East on US-64, connect with US-87 and head east. This will take you to Clayton, New Mexico.
From Clayton, head south on US-87 to North US-54 to US-412 to East Interstate 44. This takes you to Springfield, Missouri.
From Springfield, head East on 44 to North Interstate 55, then East to Interstate 64. This takes you to Lexington, Kentucky.
From Lexington, continue East on 64 to South Interstate 295 (shortcut) then back onto East Interstate 64, which will take you to Virginia Beach, Virginia.
